Here are the facts: I have attended many webinars, seminars, boot camps, and teleconferences teaching the ways of PR and the new rules of social media, marketing, pitching etc.

I am a PR professional, early on in my career and I am hungry for knowledge and advancement. I have a passion for networking, learning from others and educating myself in and outside of work. This is all in addition, of course, to my love of Public Relations strategies and emerging social media trends. I don’t think I am a minority here, I think there are plenty of young-er minds out there that want to learn to adapt new practices and learn how to blog better, engage better, pitch better (whatever it may be) and ultimately grow in their industry and in their career.

Specifically I want to learn more about SEO, HTML and blogging (but not for beginners). And the sad truth is, I don’t really have all day. I’m in the office from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm most days at an agency I love and give 100 percent to. So here’s my plea, if you’re out there and you know about boot camps, webinars, classes, or people who would be willing to sit down with me. I’m sick of going to seminars and webinars that repeat the same A, B, C rules of Twitter and Facebook, I’m looking for more.

So as I continue to dig for opportunity, and find time and vehicles to further my education in the industry I’m asking you, readers and friends…. to share your knowledge, and challenge me!

Though we all admit social media tools can be beneficial to our personal and/or corporate success, the truth of the matter is we all get lost from time to time reading less than productive blogs, or sneaking a peek at our old college roommate’s weekend fun from last weekend. Right? The key to making sure that certain social media tools remain productive for you is time management. It’s as simple as that. Here are a few steps to make sure you time spent on the social web is advantageous.

1. Manage Disruptions: Have daily priorities. Figure out what your task list is for being online. Assuming you’re actually using your social media tools to accomplish things for work or personal success…Do you want to have a blog post done by a certain time today? Do you want to have commented on all you favorite industry blogs by the time you get up and need to be out the door for dinner? Do you want to blast out a few links to the company blog and photo reel from your latest press event..? Do these things first. Then you can go see what photos your buddy uploaded from Monday Night Football last week….

2. Don’t overload on information: Pick a few sites that work best for you, NOT all of them. Stick with what you know… and when new strategies and applications are added learn them. Pick a few and know them well, rather than dabling with many. Better to be an expert in a few social media sites than hardly understand them all, am I right? Google Reader offers an easy way to monitor many blogs, but unles you can read them all, don’t subscribe. The truth is, you do’nt have time for it all – and you will make your head spin trying to monitor it all so pick what’s important and do away with the rest.

3. Learn task management: There are plenty of wasy to do this and many different programs that can help. I am an amatuer and I use my outlook task list, and my gmail task list. Don’t use your e-mail as a task list. Delete e-mails that you wont reply to, and move on. If something needs to get done.. put it on a to-do list!

4 .Get a Routines: If there are things you need to take care of once a day, or once a week. Make sure you set reminders and create a rountine for those items. (Whether it be blogging, e-mail, reporting results & updates to clients, and checking in on social networks)

5. Disconnect: Remember to unplug occasionally. Some things just won’t get done if you don’t get off facebook and twitter for a little bit, even if they do have to do w/ social media. Spend some time each day, or each week un-connected. Stay away from the computer (iphone, blackberry etc) while you prioritize your to-do list and get organized for the week.

What things do you do to stay organized and manage your to do list??? What don’t you do – that you could be doing?

CNN Money ran an article this week, Less Pay. More hours. Unhappy workers saying that the majority of workers that are still employed are dealing with longer hours and less pay and this make for unhappy and unmotivated workers. Which means the unemployed aren’t the only group that is feeling the recessions. And what about those that were laid off, and have picked up a new position simply for the paycheck, and not becaue they love the job? This group seems to have felt the recession from both angels.

The article gives this quote by Domnick Eger, an information technology specialist in Phoenix, Ariz. “You can’t help but just do the bare essentials to keep you from being fired.” He goes on to talk about how he feels stretched to a breaking point in his current position, but is unable to find a new job.

Feeling unhappy at work should not be taken lightly. In a book by Chad Foster, it claims that the average person works 86,000 hours in their lifetime, and most of us eight-to-fivers work anywhere from 40-50 hours a week. This is the majority of your time (the majority of your week) spend at a place where you may not feel challenged, may not enjoy, and according to this CNN article, you might just be miserable.

According to a recent survey by the Workforce Institute at Kronos, 40% of employees at organizations affected by layoffs say productivity has been negatively impacted, and two-thirds of them say that morale is suffering and that employees are less motivated than before.

My question is. When will this change?? When can we expect this to turn around? When will people to start be happy and fulfilled in their jobs again? When will the economy improve enough so that people feel secure enough to leave their jobs to find new ones that motivate and stimulate them again?

When are we going to get some good news? And once we do, how long will it take things to really turn around??

Success is acheived by developing our strengths, not by eliminating our weaknesses.

- Marilyn vos Savant (American Journalist)

I have learned lately that as you get further and further into your respective field or industry, some of the most important things you will learn are about yourself. You will realize what your own strengths and weaknesses are and this is an incredibly valuable lesson to learn. You’ll figure out what you’re good at, what you aren’t so good at, what you enjoy, what you can’t stand, what you don’t mind, and what you’re asked to do because your the best at it.

I think it’s invaluable to realize what you want to do in life and in your respective career and what you don’t want to do. It’s also just as important to recognize what you are aren’t great at, as it is to know where your strengths lie.

I had decided this a couple months ago, as I analyzed my own strengths and weaknesses in the field of public relations, and I was recently given an amazing bit of advice that backed up my own belief. Many management programs will focus on strength and weaknesses and once you can label what those are for you, they focus you on your weaknesses with the intention on improving you and making you better and more able in those areas. Now – this may sound like a great idea, but this smart and successful woman giving me this advice painted a different picture for me. Why in the world would you categorize your strengths and weakness and what you enjoy vs. what you don’t, only to zero in on what you’re bad at? If you are a great writer, and a great speaker, why in the world wouldn’t you focus on those areas in order to better yourself, and get better in an area where you clearly have talent? If you can think on your feet, and are a fantastic sales person, or pitcher – then why would you sit yourself down and put pen to paper (or typing fingers to mac book air… whatever) and force yourself to learn to be a good writer? Exactly. You wouldn’t, or at least you wouldn’t enjoy it.

It makes very little sense to focus on the negative and/or weakness and beat yourself up for it. The clarity and sense is in focusing on what you love to do, and improving on that skill that you are good at until you can rightfully call it an area of expertise.

I’ve taken this lessons and I am letting it direct the rest of my career. Money shouldn’t lead you, acheiving fame shouldn’t direct your path, happiness and contentment – enjoyment in the workplace SHOULD! So figure out what you love to do – and if you learn to do that well, the money and success will soon catch up to you.

At times, our strengths propel us so far forward we can no longer endure our weaknesses and perish from them.

- Friedrich Nietzsche (German Classical Scholar, Philosopher & Critic of Culture 1844-1900).

The fortune read, “Unveil your ideas, be ready to act on them.” Really it is more like advice than a fortune, and maybe that’s why it stuck with me. I think that life, career, ambition, and achievement are very centered around the idea of finding simple phrases and ideas such as this and letting them drive you towards you next goal, your next benchmark, and the inspiration that they provide move you forward. In the past couple weeks this phrase has been at the back of my mind as a motivator for me. Rather than keeping my ideas to myself, or simply keeping them scribbled in my massive and overly highlighted notebook — share them, speak up, UNVEIL them. But once you do this, be prepared, (never too prepared) have actions in mind, know the next steps ahead of time — and use your ideas to spur MOVEMENT in your company, in your brand, in your career, in your life.

I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately to that fact that I am in the work force, I’ve got a social web presence that I am working on strengthening, I feel motivated to continue building my skill set, experiences, and opportunities, and… I am a woman. I am often talking to my roommate about the fact that we’ve recently lost a handful of friends to marriage at the ripe age of 22/23 and how frankly, that scares us to death. How could you possibly be ready to settle that early in life? (Now, with all do respect, to each his own, etc, I’m not judging young marriages at all!) That being said, I have seen some young brides sit around at home, trying to figure out what they do with their lives and what they feel passionate about. Maybe if they felt the pressure of a paycheck and things would be moving a little faster for them…I’m just saying.

I have made some great connections via twitter and other social web outlets and I’ve gotten great advice and encouragement through these connections. (Especially through the lay off and job search phase I just came out of.) However, sometimes I feel frustrated that they aren’t more young women out there who are fearful, ambitious, and worried about the same things. Granted, there are a large number of successful women , it’s my age group that I am often frustrated with. I am blessed to have a handful of great (girl)friends who are in great jobs, law school, etc and who all performing well. They are powerful and successful young women – but why does it feel we are outnumbered?

Maybe these are simply the rantings of a someone who has consistently been the youngest in the office, and is about to start work as part of a team of older males. Either way, I’m learning to fight the self doubt that says, I’m just a young female in this office… and turn those into positive thoughts that assure me I have more insight and more energy and will be better because of it!!
